The sustainability challange |
||

Affordability and environmental demands are often connected to each other. They both are in accordance with sustainability. The most obvious interface between the two is, again, weight. Cars built with high strength stainless steel materials weigh less, thus enabling increased fuel economy.
The materials tested and used in the project are new to the car industry. Stainless steel is very processable. It can be formed to complex parts, with radically reduced amounts of scrap. In addition to this it can be made extremely thin. This is cost effective as well as congruent with the project´s environmental aims. The life cycle of stainless steel is attractive in that it is 100% recyclable.
Volumes are crucial, as always. The larger the volumes produced, the less the price of each produced unit. This will be an initial obstacle for the industry to overcome. Once transpositioning starts, this will have ceased to be an obstacle.
